Freeze drying with the BÜCHI Glass Oven B-585
Freeze Drying is a classic method for the separation of water or other solvents under extremely mild conditions. Due to the low vacuum, the state of aggregation is below the triple point and the solvent is directly transformed into the gaseous phase. Disadvantageous are the long process times and the resulting energy consumption. With the BÜCHI Glass Oven B-585, as newest product of this Swiss company, it is now also possible to perform lyophilisation in small scales. Combined with a condenser (cooled by a circulating chiller) or a cold trap (cooled by dry ice) and an efficient pump, the setup is ready. A special freeze drying tube is inserted into the heating space. Due to the low vacuum around the tube, it is insulated and a local overheating by convection can be prevented. The radiation of the heating tube is evenly admitted to the product leading to a significant shortening in process times. The sample space has an excellent visibility and the angle of the heating tube is continuously adjustable between horizontal and vertical position. So this setup is particularly suitable to perform freeze drying of small sample volumes, to make feasibility studies of the drying behaviour or as an alternative to the standard drying method for extremely temperature sensitive material. This device can further be used for sample drying at up to 300°C, sensitive distillations can be performed with the famous Kugelrohr glass assembly and drive unit and even sublimation is possible with a special glass insert - more info at www.kugelrohr.com. The BÜCHI Glass Oven B-585 - so convenient, you should not do without it!
